Overview
The Symmetry S823 is a contactless smart card reader designed for government agencies adopting
federal personal identity verification standards including FIPS 201. The
Symmetry S823 reads
both Philips® MIFARE® and Philips MIFARE® DESFire smart cards
in addition to FIPS 201 cards
and is designed for mounting on most standard electrical backboxes.
In addition to being able to read FIPS 201 compliant cards, the reader meets the requirements
of the Government Smart Card Interoperability Specification GSC-IS v2.1 and the
Smart Card Enabled Physical Access Control Systems Technical Implementation Guidance
PACS v2.2. The Symmetry S823 also supports the use of unencoded cards (where only the unique
serial number is read).
The Symmetry S823 can simultaneously support two different card types/formats (e.g. non-encoded
MIFARE and smartMAX encoded MIFARE DESfire, or non encoded MIFARE and smartMAX encoded
MIFARE). The reader is automatically configured to accept the first two card types/formats
presented.
The Symmetry S823 can be connected to the multiNODE- 1000, multiNODE-2 SMD, multiNODE-2000,
multiNODE- 2100 and multiNODE-2150 controllers and is compatible with Symmetry Business, Symmetry Professional, Symmetry Enterprise
and Symmetry Global Software at Version 4.0 or later.
Unlike Wiegand interface readers, the Symmetry S823 uses secure, bi-directional, Pseudo Random
supervised communications between the multiNODE controllers and their associated
readers. An alarm will occur if communications are lost.
A distance from any of the multiNODE controllers to the Symmetry S823 reader of up to 3000ft
(1000m) can also be achieved.
The Symmetry S823 has a maximum read range of typically up to 0.4” (10mm).
Other key reader features include LED’s for visual indication of card accepted or
card rejected and an integrated buzzer for card read and door pre-held warning.
